There are parts of Brooklyn that have blown up in the few decades - parts that are all quite close to Manhattan. But deep into the borough of Brooklyn lies what some call the “true Brooklyn.” And perhaps no part of that “real Brooklyn” is more iconic and special than the Coney Island Beach and Boardwalk. Make the trek at least once or twice in your life and while you’re there, hit the nearby and also iconic L&B Spumoni Gardens.Read More
The New York Hall of Science opened in 1964 as part of the World’s Fair and as one of the first hands-on science museums in the country. Today, NYSci is still a really cute place to visit with young kids on a cold, rainy or wintry day….....OR
You could follow our lead and visit on a beautiful spring or summer Saturday. There are some cool things happening right outside NYSci in nice weather. Read on
Playgrounds and parenting go hand-in-hand in warmer weather. Young kids just absolutely love climbing, sliding and spinning their way through spring and summer. When we visit the city in nice weather, we always include a playground - preferably, a really good playground - to sweeten the deal for our kids.
So I hereby present to you my personal favorite NYC playgrounds I’ve visited so far as a parent. I would call each of these a “Destination Playground,” very much worthy of a visit. And as a fun little added bonus, I’ve included a solid family friendly food stop nearby each playground.
There are still many good playgrounds I haven’t hit yet in NYC, so please send me any recommendations in the comments!Read More
Last summer I wrote a post about our family’s day in Astoria, Queens. The post mentioned our “signature” move of combining a kid-friendly activity with nearby adult-friendly eats or drinks. This weekend we took that same move to neighboring Long Island City, Queens and had a colder, but equally awesome day in Queens with our kids.Read More
The song may go, “I Want Candy” but in my house, it’s the kiddies that always want candy. Morning, noon and night. I’m much more of a salty than sweet gal but I know that for many folks - young and old - candy is heavenly.
If you love candy, then you MUST hit up the iconic and classic NY candy shop, Economy Candy on Rivington Street.Read More
I recently posted some of my favorite spots for adulting in Manhattan. This got me thinking about the daunting task of finding good spots to eat WITH your kids in Manhattan.
It’s sad but true that Manhattan dining is not particularly kid friendly. Go to Austin, TX or Portland, OR or even Brooklyn, NY, and you’ll find lots of really good spots where your kids can tag along and you’ll still get a great meal. Not true in Manhattan. Roughly 98% of the best food in that borough is below 14th Street and well, Downtown Manhattan isn’t exactly swarming with strollers.
I’ve thought long and hard and I’ve come up with a few really solid spots where your kids are welcome in Manhattan. I’ve excluded take out joints and zero ambiance counter service spots from the list - each of which can be kid friendly and very tasty, but aren’t really “dining”. Let me know what you think!Read More
