Pizza Pizza Pie at the Parlor in Dobbs Ferry

Pizza Pizza Pie at the Parlor in Dobbs Ferry

As a parent, you’re going to be around a lot of pizza. So why not make it really GOOD pizza? There are many ways in which the suburbs are lacking when it comes to food, but good pizza is not one of them. We have several solid options around here, from Neapolitan style to bar pies.

One such very solid option is The Parlor in Dobbs Ferry, NY. If you’ve been, you know that it’s very good; AND, you know that you slice your own pizza pie with scissors provided. What kid wouldn’t love that??

Right over the Tappan Zee Bridge, an adventure awaits. That is, you can grab legit craft beer, a solid burger and maybe take in some bowling, arcade games and a ropes course all in a day’s time.

This morning, we threw the kids in the car, drove less than an hour and first landed at District 96 Beer Factory in New City, New York. From there, it was just another 10 minute drive to the Palisades Center. Read on for deets.

What to Do at Boo at the Zoo!

What to Do at Boo at the Zoo!

We had so much fun at Boo at the Zoo! We usually visit the Bronx Zoo on the hottest, most humid summer days, so it really was a treat to finally be there on a crisp fall day - I think the cooler weather made the animals come out and about more, too. And adding in the Zoo’s adorable Halloween themed extras really made the visit even better. Coming to the Bronx Zoo in October for Boo at the Zoo is the ideal way to visit and an ideal way to celebrate the holiday!

My Dueling Farm Visits

My Dueling Farm Visits

If you have small children, odds are you’re taking them to a farm this fall to pick some form of fruit or vegetable (pumpkins are veggies, right?) But not all farms are created equal. Just like people, farms come in all shapes and sizes and offerings.

And one such farm offering is what I now refer to as the “Big Box Farms”. These are the farms that equate autumn with a party and come late September, turn their farm into a full fledged carnival of attractions. Sure these farms might be just as passionate about their product as the tiniest farm you’ve ever seen, but they want to make sure that, while you’re picking those products, you’re also getting your face painted, running through a corn maze and getting catapulted into the sky on a bungee cord.

I’m talking places like  Harvest Moon Orchard, in Croton Falls, NY,  Silverman’s Farm in Easton, CT and Long Island’s Harbes Family Farm. The girls and I visited Harvest Moon and Harbes back-to-back over the past two weekends and I’m here to tell you about what we saw.

Man, I Love Halloween

Man, I Love Halloween

Now that I have kids, Halloween might be my favorite holiday. No, I'm not one of those old folks who still loves to get dressed up. But I think it is so much fun watching the kiddies get so excited to pick their costumes and later, to run around like crazy persons in pursuit of free candy. As they get a bit older, it'll be cool to add some haunted houses to our Halloween rotation. Gotta take it all in before they learn that Halloween means sexy costumes and keg stands.

On that note, here are some do not miss Halloween celebrations happening in the tri-state area!

Feed Your Kids - Manhattan Fall 2018 Edition

Feed Your Kids - Manhattan Fall 2018 Edition

I recently posted some of my favorite spots for adulting in Manhattan. This got me thinking about the daunting task of finding good spots to eat WITH your kids in Manhattan.

It’s sad but true that Manhattan dining is not particularly kid friendly. Go to Austin, TX or Portland, OR or even Brooklyn, NY, and you’ll find lots of really good spots where your kids can tag along and you’ll still get a great meal. Not true in Manhattan. Roughly 98% of the best food in that borough is below 14th Street and well, Downtown Manhattan isn’t exactly swarming with strollers.

I’ve thought long and hard and I’ve come up with a few really solid spots where your kids are welcome in Manhattan.  I’ve excluded take out joints and zero ambiance counter service spots from the list - each of which can be kid friendly and very tasty, but aren’t really “dining”.  Let me know what you think!

5 Cute Ways to Ring in Fall

The summer always flies by. One minute you’re drinking piña coladas by the pool, the next minute camp is over, "Back to School" merch is appearing in stores and your kids are telling you what they want to be for Halloween.

Never fear! I’m here to help. Here are 5 cute ways to ring in early fall!

A Visit to the Chelsea Waterfront

A Visit to the Chelsea Waterfront

Hey fellow suburbanites who are intimidated by city driving!! A super cool new playground opened weeks ago in Chelsea, right off the West Side Highway. It's a straight shoot down from Connecticut or Westchester. Head out early on a weekend and you'll fly in!!

The Chelsea Waterside Play Area, located on West 23rd and the West Side Highway and part of the overall beautiful Hudson River Park, was recently gutted, redone and made AWESOME. Well worth the easy drive in from the 'burbs.

A Nice Little Day in Astoria

A Nice Little Day in Astoria

Most of my visits to Astoria, Queens over the years have been solely for the purpose of getting good Greek food. This past weekend, we still came for Greek food, but decided to make a whole day of our visit. It was a low key, great day. And there's plenty other stuff worth coming back to Astoria for.

Maine: It’s Closer and Better Than You Think

Ahh Maine. A special state for us. Both my  husband and I visited Maine each summer as little ones. We each must have liked it, because we’re still coming back now with our little ones.

Our trips always center around Ogunquit, an adorable seaside town in Southern Maine, not too far from the New Hampshire border. At approximately 4 hours from our house, it’s a very easy summer getaway. Read on for more details about our 2018 Maine adventure.

Get a Sitter: Because The Whelk is My Favorite

Get a Sitter: Because The Whelk is My Favorite

If you follow local food news at all, then you already know that Chef Bill Taibe is a rock star around these parts. If you don’t follow local food news, then I’m here to tell you that Bill Taibe is a rock star around these parts.

A James Beard Award Semifinalist for multiple years, Chef Taibe is the real deal. His three* [some signs indicate there’s another on the horizon!!] restaurants, all in Westport, CT, are so damn good, they’re not only worth traveling to, but I believe they rival some of the best of NYC dining. The Whelk, the oldest of the three operating restaurants (RIP Le Farm), is my personal favorite and especially shines in warmer weather. Read on for more details.
